Hodgkin's Disease
Hodgkins disease is a type of lymphoma characterized by the orderly spread of disease from one lymph node group to another. With a cure rate of approximately 93%, Hodgkin's disease is one of most treatable forms of cancer.
Symptoms
Swollen, rubbery lymph nodes are the classic symptom of Hodgkin's disease, and are usually first noticed in the neck. The lymph nodes in the chest are also often affected and can be detected on X-rays. Fevers, night sweats, and weight loss are also secondary symptoms of the disease. Diagnosis must distinguish Hodgkin's from other cancers, and a lymph biopsy is usually required to make a definitive diagnosis.
Treatment Options
After proper diagnosis, patients are staged, or examined to determine the areas of the body affected and treatment routes to be taken. Blood tests and a variety of medical imaging are used to determine the location and stages of development of the disease. Patients in early stages of the disease are usually treated with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. The normal course of this therapy is six to eight months.
